On August 5, Hong Kong stocks finally saw a long-awaited strong rally. The Hang Seng Index opened higher and climbed steadily, briefly breaking above the 30,000-point mark in the afternoon as tech and financial stocks rallied together. It closed at 30,123, up 1.12%, marking the highest closing level in nearly three months. Market turnover expanded significantly, surpassing HK$250 billion for the full day, up more than 30% from the previous session, indicating a clear recovery in bullish sentiment.
Broad-Based Rally in Blue Chips
Today's Hong Kong market saw broad gains across sectors, with the Hang Seng Tech Index surging 2.35% to lead major indices. AI computing power, semiconductors, and consumer electronics were among the standout performers. Meanwhile, high-dividend defensive sectors also attracted safe-haven capital, with multiple power and telecom stocks hitting new stage highs.
Among blue chips, Tencent Holdings (00700) rose 2.8%, Meituan-W (03690) gained 3.2%, and Alibaba-SW (09988) advanced 1.9%, with heavyweight stocks collectively contributing over 200 points to the Hang Seng Index. In the financial sector, AIA Group (01299) and Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (00388) both rose about 1.5%, while HSBC Holdings (00005) also posted a moderate gain.
AI Computing Power Chain Explodes
The biggest market focus today was the AI industry chain. Hong Kong stocks across upstream chip design, midstream server manufacturing, and downstream cloud computing applications all showed notable moves.
- Semiconductor equipment and materials leader SMIC (00981) rose 4.2%, rallying on heavy volume for three consecutive days to hit a record closing high;
- AI server supplier Lenovo Group (00992) gained 5.1%, with the market expecting its AI PC and server orders to continue beating expectations;
- Cloud computing and big data services provider Kingdee International (00268) advanced 6.3%, leading the software sector.
In addition, according to recent industry reports, global AI infrastructure investment is expected to exceed US$300 billion by 2026, with computing chips and servers accounting for more than 70%. Hong Kong-listed AI chain companies, backed by valuation and order advantages, are becoming targets of both foreign and southbound capital.
Southbound Capital Net Buying for 8th Consecutive Day
On the capital flow front, Stock Connect southbound trading recorded net buying of HK$15.8 billion today, the largest single-day net inflow in nearly a month. Since the start of August, cumulative southbound net inflows have exceeded HK$45 billion, with key additions focused on internet leaders, AI computing power, and consumption recovery beneficiaries.
Analysts noted that Hong Kong stock valuations remain at a trough among major global markets this year, with the Hang Seng Index's forward P/E ratio at only around 11 times, compared with over 20 times for the US S&P 500. Against the backdrop of expectations for looser overseas liquidity and steady domestic economic recovery, Hong Kong stocks offer strong value.
Consumer and Pharma Also Perform Well
Beyond the tech theme, the consumer sector also showed broad strength. Restaurant leader Haidilao (06862) rose 4.6%, and Yum China (09987) gained 3.1%. On the news front, many regions issued new rounds of consumption vouchers, coupled with the peak summer travel season, leading to upward earnings revisions for restaurants, tourism, and retail sectors.
In the pharmaceutical sector, innovative drug companies were boosted by policy tailwinds. Innovent Biologics (01801) rose 5.8%, BeiGene (06160) rebounded 4.3%, and the Hang Seng Healthcare Index rose 1.9% today.
Outlook: How to Position Above 30,000 Points?
Looking ahead, institutions generally believe that with earnings growth and loosening liquidity reinforcing each other, Hong Kong stocks are likely to maintain a volatile upward trend, although the recent rapid gains may trigger technical corrections.
An international investment bank strategist said: "After the Hang Seng Index stands above 30,000 points, the next resistance level is seen at 31,000 points. Investors are advised to focus on earnings-valuation alignment and accumulate positions on dips in the three core directions of AI, new energy, and consumption."
However, some also cautioned that geopolitical risks and Federal Reserve policy volatility remain the biggest variables. Investors should manage position sizes carefully and closely monitor upcoming interim earnings and domestic economic data.
Overall, today's market performance was broadly positive with significant wealth effects, and the short-term sentiment indicator has turned constructive. With sustained capital inflows and policy expectations, the next phase of Hong Kong stocks is worth anticipating.
